May 8; John A. Groh to Susannah Lehner, May 13, W. Waltman.

Obituary --- John Adam Groh was born in Berks county, Pennsylvania Nov 10, 1835 and departed this life at his home in Richland township Nov 1, 1907, aged 71 years 11 months and 21 days. The deceased, at the age of six years moved with his parents to Stark County, Ohio, where they resided until, at the age of ten, he with his parents moved to Dekalb County, Indiana where he remained the rest of his long and useful life, much of which time was spent tilling the soil. IN THE YEAR OF May 12, 1861 he was united in marriage to Susannah Lehner. Five children were born to this union. Martha J Groh, David H Groh, Sarah C. Goetschius, Florinda Dick, and William Groh. He also leaves his wife, one sister Mrs. Florinda Friend, thirteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, besides a host of friends to mourn his death. And with his wife, they comforted an affectionate husband and father through his last affliction He united with the Lutheran church in the year 1858. His faith remained steadfast until he was called where there is no more pain nor sorrow. Truly, a good man has been called to his rest, On Sunday morning the funeral service was held at the Richland Lutheran Church, (SIXTEEN) of which he was a member for nearly fifty years. The large and sympathetic audience more than taxed the capacity of the large building. Rev. D. A. Kuhn, The pastor conducted the service, preaching from the words “I have finished my course, I have kept my faith.” After the service the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery nearby. We extend to the bereft ones our greatest sympathy in their time of sorrow

Ft Wayne News-Sentinel Nov 2, 1907 Noble County Pioneer Dies Kendallville, Ind., Nov 1-- John Groh died at his home three and one half miles east of Lisbon, aged seventy-three years. Mr Groh was a pioneer resident, having lived in this section for over fifty years, being identified with the early history of Corunna and Lisbon neighborhoods. He came here when the country was wild and dense with forests and helped to clear the country. He was also a great deer hunter and the stories he has told about his experiences have proved a source of wonderment and admiration among the younger generation. His death was due to a complication of diseases. The deceased was a brother of the late Isreal Groh, father of the well known Maurice Groh, of this city, and brother of Mrs Norris Friend, who survives him. He also leaves a family consisting of a wife and five children. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. Kuhn, of Corunna, and will be held at chapel No. 16, east of Lisbon, at 11 o'clock Sunday morning.

June 7, 2006 - From Amy Dohner -------- Subject: Re: David H. Groh Author: Amy Dohner Date: 06 Jun 2006 3:03 AM GMT (Email: -- adohner@@hotmail.com ) I was wondering if you had gotten an answer on this post... it seems that we have a connection. John Henry Groh was one of my great great great grandfathers children. If you need any information on this still, please respond. We have this tree traced back two more generations than John Henry. His wife's maiden name was GRUNDEN. They were married Aug 9, 1886 in Richland Township, Dekalb County, Indiana. My record comes from family histories.

Hello Linda. I was pleased to get your response. Although I won't be able to assist you much in the Grunden Line, I can shed a couple of generations of light on your Groh heritage. David Henry was one of 5 childre

Martha Jane Groh was born on April 4, 1862 and died on Feb. 7, 1937.
David Henry Groh was born on Oct 19, 1863 and died in Oct 1938. (your Gr. Gr. Grandfather)
Sarah Catherine Groh was born on Dec 22, 1865 and died in June 1950.(my Gr.Gr.Gr.Grandmother)
Florinda Elizabeth Groh was born Apr 17, 1870 and died in Dec 1951.
Willian Edwin Groh was born July 15, 1880 and died in Oct 1962.

    Martha was never married.
David Henry married Emma Grunden on Aug 9th, 1886, and later moved to Michigan.
Sarah Catherine married Ira Goetschius on Nov 23, 1884 and lived in Allen County.
Florinda Elizabeth married Christopher Dick date unknown, and then moved to California.
William married Nettie Miller Howarth in 1905 and I believe they stayed in Indiana.

The parents of these children were John Adam Groh and Susannah (Lehner) Groh. They were married on May 12, 1861. John Adam, Susannah, Martha are buried at 16 cemetery in Dekalb County, Indiana. These are all facts according to my Gr. Gr. Gr. grandmothers date book. The names can be substantiated through the census and other documents. I have a family portrait of the John Adam Groh family with their spouses. Your Emma Grunden is in the picture. NEXT GENERATION: We know that John Adam's father's name was David Groh, and his mother was Sarah (Fisher) Groh. We think that John Adam was born in Pennsylvania. We know from John Adam's obituary that he lived as a small boy in Stark County, OH. and moved here to Indiana when he was around 10 years old. We do not know when/where his parents were married, or when the families came to the US, but we believe that David and Sarah were both born in the USA. From the 1850 Census, (under the name of Krok) it states that David and Sarah were both born in Pennsylvania, and that their children were all born in Ohio. He had 4 children listed on the census.

   Susan age 16 in 1850
   John Adam age 14
   Israel age 12
   Florinda age 6

We do not know of any other children. From our research we have discovered that David Kroh joined the 129th Infantry from Corunna, Indiana in 1864. He was in the Army for about 5 months, and died in Madison, Indiana, on August 14, 1864. He is buried at New Albany National Cemetery. This is where our brick wall is. We are trying to get more info on David and Sarah in Ohio, and Penn.

It has been very difficult to find information on these families, as we have found entries under the names of Groh, Grow, Kroh, Kroah, and Krok.

I hope that this helps you in your quest for information. the long lost cousin you never knew you had... Amy
