John Fite the eldest son and child of Leonard and Margareth Cross, was born in December, 1781 in Allen Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and moved with his parents to Lincoln County, N.C. in 1787^[1] and in 1796 to Tennessee where he was living in 1840^[2]. He married twice, to Nancy Smith at an early age by whom he had twelve children; second to Mary Evans, no issue. He is found in Dallas County, Arkansas on the 1850 Census^[3]. He is living in Smith, Dallas, Arkansas in 1860 with a daughter and her family^[4].

In 1861, the anniversary of his mother's one hundredth birthday, John Fite was eighty years of age, and at that time had only five children living; he had thirty-six grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He died in Dallas County, Arkansas, just prior to the civil war^[1].
