Tilton, Francis Theodore; History of the Tilton Family in America (as quoted by Millard Fillmore Timm)

"John, at a very young age, had a desire to go to sea, but his mother was greatly opposed to this because of the tragic death of his father while engaged in a similar pursuit. Although still under age, his mother finally consented and he got his wish. He went to sea. On one of his voyages his ship was overtaken by the notorious pirate, Captain Phillips. Owing to the chance meeting of one whom he had known at home and had since become a member of the pirate's crew, John Fillmore was singled out and his captain had to give up the lad or else suffer the loss of his vessel and the capture of himself and his entire crew. John was greatly opposed to serving with the pirate and steadfastly refused to sign the piratical agreement; nevertheless, he was impressed into service. He abided his time, however, and in due course overcame and killed the pirate, mastered the crew, and finally returned in triumph to Massachusetts with the vessel. The pirate's sword, his large earrings, and other curious articles were awarded to young John by the court."
