    ... The second of the four children, John Carson FEBIGER, born February 14, 1821, and died October 9, 1898, entered the United States Navy as Midshipman, September 14, 1838, and passed through all the intervening grades until February 4, 1882, when he was commissioned Rear Admiral. He was attached to the Concord of the Brazil Squadron, when she was wrecked on the eastern coast of Africa in 1843. During the Civil War, then holding the rank of Commander, he participated in numerous engagements, and performed commendable service upon all occasions. In the engagement with the Confederate ram Albemarle, in Albemarle Sound, May 5, 1864, he commanded the Mattabeset, and was commended for his "gallantry and skill" by Captain Melancton SMITH and Admiral Samuel P. LEE. He also commanded a ship of Admiral FARRAGUT's fleet at the capture of Mobile and New Orleans.

    He was twice married first, May 3, 1840, to Anna C. RYAN and secondly, January 1882 to Eleanor JOHNSON.
    Issue, six children, all by his first wife, of whom three survive. Only one of three lives in Philadelphia, Henry Boyce FEBIGER, 4750 Penn Street, Germantown. The older son, John Carson FEBIGER lives at 6029 Benjamin Street, New Orleans. One daughter married, Mary Irene FEBIGER, who became the wife of Alexandre Bossan DE GARAGNOL, who resides in France. ...
