A descendant has told me that "John Henry changed the way he spelled his last name from Earnest to Ernest. No one seems to know why; perhaps just youthful individuality at play. In any case, everything I (the descendant) have demonstrates that from Jon Henry down his line, all of his descendants used 'Ernest'; though all of his siblings retained the spelling of Earnest."
