John Egalton was born 15 Feb 1772, son of waterman Jonathan Egleton & Ann Chiswick of Poplar. He was christened at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church, Stepney on 1 Mar 1772.

The reasoning behind thinking this is the correct christening record for John is that according to watermen records, a John Egalton was bound to master John Egalton on 18 May 1786 and released 4 Jul 1793. This would make John the minimum age of 14 at binding. Although the master's name is John Egleton and the father's name on the christening record is Jonathan, I have assumed they are the same person. The waterman birth affidavit records would give more definitive proof that these assumptions are correct.

On 24 Nov 1794 John married Rebecca James, daughter of waterman Robert James and his wife Susannah Worland, at St. Matthew's Church. They had at least 12 children, all born in Poplar:

1. Thomas Egalton, b. 1 Nov 1795
2. Rebecca Jane Egalton, b. 19 Aug 1797
3. Ann Egalton, b. 4 Sep 1799
4. John James Egalton, b. 27 Aug 1801
5. Elizabeth Sarah Egalton, b. 17 Jun 1803
6. Robert Egalton, b. 18 Jul 1805
7. Jonathan Briggs Egalton, b. 1 Nov 1807
8. Benjamin William Egalton, b. 14 Nov 1809
9. Joseph Egalton, b. abt 1812
10. Richard Egalton, b. 10 Jan 1814
11. Sarah Egalton, b. 13 Jan 1816
12. Susanna Mary Egalton, b. 1 Aug 1818

On 5 April 1810 John paid £26 for his son Thomas to be apprenticed to butcher Richard Hould for seven years (image available from Guildhall Library).

John (or possibly his son John) was a witness at the marriage of his daughter Rebecca in 1820. He is not with his wife in the 1841 census so had probably died.

Their child Joseph Egalton married Eliza Ingram, daughter of Owen Skinner and Hannah Ingram. Their gr-gr-grandchild Henry Charles Young married Rosetta Whitfield, the gr-grandchild of Owen and Hannah.

Research notes

Many people have added the 1829 burial of a John Egalton at All Saints Poplar to their tree. This states that he was 68 when he died, so born about 1761, married at age 33 and had his last child at 57. Either they recorded his age incorrectly at death or this is the wrong John Egalton.

There is also a John Eagleton buried 1822 Spitalfields Christ Church with St Mary and St Stephen. Age is stated at 46, so he'd be born about 1776. This makes him married at 18 and last child at 42.

John was listed on his children's baptism records between 1795 and 1809 as a waterman. From 1814 to 1818 he is listed as a victualler. There may be records that mention John in the waterman records at the Guildhall library. The waterman Apprentice Bindings books (which record the name of the apprentice, the date of binding, the master's name and mooring, and the date of freedom (i.e when the apprentice having learned his trade, qualified to get his own license) cover the period 1688 to 1949.
