He was a Leiden Separatist who probably came to Leiden around 1615 and to Plymouth in 1629 or 1630. He was a weaver by trade, a Deacon of the Church under Elder Brewster, a Deputy to the General Court from 1639-1664, and a member of the Council of War. He has been alleged to have been the same person as Mayflower passenger John Goodman by family historian, Isaac Watson Dunham, but this assertion is given no credence by researchers today. Equally unlikely is the frequently suggested parentage of Thomas Dunham and Janet Bromely

- His will was dated 25 Jan 1668/9, an inventory was taken 16 Mar 1668, and was exhibited to the Court 4 Jun 1669. Plymouth Col. Wills, II, pt 2, p.53. It names wife Abigail executrix, sons, (eldest son), Benajah (son), Daniel (son), Stephen Wood (son-in-law), Thomas (son). A copy of the will is published in The Mayflower Descendant (17:113).
- Yr 1668 on the first of March dyed John Dunham godly & well esteemed Deacon of the church one of 80 years old." Plymouth Church Records, Vol. 1, p. 144.
