Facts and Events
John Dugger was born ca 1806/07 in Brunswick Co, VA. He is a proven child of Henry and Armon Dugger. John Dugger was apparently with his widowed mother Armon on the 1810 Brunswick Co, VA census. John Dugger was named in the August 1816 Court record dividing his father Henry Dugger's estate. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 27 page 142). John Dugger was named in the May 1817 Court record dividing his father Henry Dugger's estate. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 27 page 304). John Dugger did not appear on the 1820 census. He was probably living wherever his mother was that year (haven't found her yet). I didn't find John Dugger in 1830 either. He was probably wherever his mother was that year. On 22 Dec 1831 John Dugger obtained a marriage bond in Brunswick Co, VA to marry Sally E. Parish listed as "of full age" meaning she didn't need her parents permission to marry. Dudley B. Peebles was bondsman. Sally could be a sister of Frances Parish who married John's brother Sterling Dugger. The bondsman might be a close relative of Martha Peebles who married their brother Joseph Dugger. Beginning in 1836, John Dugger and his brother Sterling Dugger were listed on the Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list together with 37 acres on Couch's Run. I'm not sure where they got this land. They may have inherited it from their father somehow, or from their wives (if they were sisters) family. John Dugger and his brother Sterling Dugger were listed on the 1838 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. John Dugger and his brother Sterling Dugger were listed on the 1839 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. John Dugger and his brother Sterling Dugger were listed on the 1840 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. John Dugger was listed on the 1840 census in Brunswick Co, VA. Analysis:
John Dugger and his brother Sterling Dugger were listed on the 1841 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. On the 1842 Tax List, Sterling alone was listed with the 37 acres, so this suggests that John sold him his share of the land. I didn't find a deed showing this though. In 1844, John Dugger was named (among others) in a deed giving Power of Attorney to Douglas H. Wray for dividing property of his Uncle James Dugger, deceased, of Tippah Co, MS. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 33 page 479). In 1844 John Dugger was named in a deed as administrator of Rebecca Dugger, deceased (his Aunt) in regards to her portion of the estate of her brother James Dugger, deceased, of Tippah Co, MS. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 34 page 282). In 1845 John Dugger was again named again in relationship to the estate of his Uncle James Dugger, and of his Aunt Sarah Dugger Shell, deceased. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 34 page 51). John Dugger and family were listed in Brunswick Co, VA on the 1850 census in the Southern District.
I haven't followed up on this family for additional information yet. References
