    18. SR CAPT JOHN5 DENTON (JOHN/JONAS4, SAMUEL3, REV RICHARD2, RICHARD1, RICHARDA) was born 1700 [s/b abt. 1710/1713] in HEMPSTEAD, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK, and died 1765 in FREDERICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA. He married SARAH ODELL, daughter of ISAAC ODELL and SARAH HOYT. She was born 1727 in Rye, Westchester, New York, and died 1796 in WASHINGTON COUNTY, TENNESSEE.

Marriage Notes for CAPT DENTON and SARAH ODELL:
Captain John Denton, our ancestor, was the son of Jonah Denton and Jane Seaman. He was born 1710 In Hempstead, Long Island, New York. He married Sarah Odell, the daughter of Isaac and Sarah Hoyt Odell, who was born in Rye, Westchester County, New York.
John Denton left Orange County, New York with his father and came to Dunmore County, Virginia, where in 1735, Jonah Denton, John Denton and Thomas Palmer purchased a tract of land containing 3100 acres situated lying and being on the north river of Shenandoah, then in the County of Dunmore, now Shenandoah County, Virginia.
John Denton and his father, Jonah were among those who signed the petition to form Frederick County from Orange County in 1739. He was commissioned a Justice of the Peace August 27, 1751. In the book "Colonial Soldiers of the South, 1732-1774" states that "Capt. John Denton was militia captain for the Shenandoah area during the French and Indian War."
In the Augusta County, Virginia Deed Book, we find a deed, where Jonah Denton leaves his son, John Denton, 417 acres of land, BK G, pg 462 on October 20, 1750.
Captain John Denton made his will October 13, 1755. He names his three sons, Jonah, Samuel (our ancestor), and Thomas Denton and states he has a daughter, but does not name her. She could be Abigail Denton that married David Jobe, November 24, 1772, in Dunmore County, Virginia. His will was probated August 4, 1767 in Frederick County, Virginia.
Item 2 of his will states: "I give unto my beloved son, Samuel Denton, one hundred twenty acres of land joining the said Jonah's land and running the said survey length.
After the death of Captain John Denton, his wife, Sarah Odell Denton married her cousin, John Odell, as proven, when Captain John Denton's will was probated, it states. "John Odell who since the death of the said John Denton hath intermarried with Sarah, his widow."
When Sarah's son removed to Washington County, Tennessee, she and John Odell went with them. Sarah died in Washington County, Tennessee in 1796.
