John Murphy Daniels, son of Samuel D. Daniels and Jane Ann Murphy, was born on 24 May 1877 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John Murphy Daniels appeared on the census of 1880 in the household of his parents at 1206 Moore Street, Philadelphia. While working at his brother George's restaurant near the Atlantic Refining Company, John met a young waitress, Martha Smith. In 1899, John was living at 1211 Ritner Street and working as a freight trucker. He married Martha Smith, daughter of William Henry Smith and Martha Clare, on 9 May 1899 in Philadelphia. The ceremony was performed by Reverend J. N. Butler. Their first child, John, was born in September 1899 in Philadelphia, but died at the age of 4 months.
John was a waiter, probably in brother George W. Daniel's restaurant in 1900. John Murphy Daniels and his wife Martha appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of his in-laws, William and Martha (Clare) Smith, at 1220 Mercy Street, Philadelphia. Son Walter was born on 13 November 1900 in Philadelphia. Son Thomas was born on 27 August 1902 in Philadelphia. The family was living at 1141 Winton Street between 1904 and 1906. Daughter Jennie was born on 23 November 1904 in Philadelphia. Son John was born on 24 May 1906 in Philadelphia and died in 1908. In 1910, John lived 2416 South Clarion Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Daughter Ruth was born on 21 January 1910 in Philadelphia and died that March. In 1910, John and Martha were renting at house at 2416 South Clarion Street with their children Walter, Thomas and Jennie. Martha's brother George D. Smith and mother, Martha Smith, were also living with the family. John was a bartender in a saloon between 1910 and 1917. John's other jobs would include professional ball player, umpire, and supplier of frogs and turtles to restaurants and laboratories. The family attended Messiah Reformed Church.
Daughter Martha was born on 2 May 1911 in Philadelphia. Son George was born on 23 September 1913 in Philadelphia. Daughter Laura was born on 22 October 1915 in Philadelphia. Between 1917 and 1921, the family lived at 2617 South Jessup Street, Philadelphia. John's son, George W. Daniels, died on 5 March 1917 in Philadelphia. Son Robert was born on 20 September 1917 in Philadelphia. Son William was born on 7 August 1919 in Philadelphia.
John and Martha appeared on the census of 1920 with their children Walter, Thomas, Jennie, Martha, Laura, Robert and Bill at 2617 South Jessup Street. John was listed as a hunter in 1920 and as a guard in 1921. John and Martha's last child, Alice, was born on 21 February 1921 in Philadelphia. John's daughter, Martha A. Daniels, died on 7 March 1921 in Philadelphia of diabetes.
John was a dealer in fishbait in 1930. John and Martha appeared on the census of 1930 with their children Tom, Bob, Bill, Alice and Laura 2220 South Woodstock Street, Philadelphia. On on 26 August 1934 John was struck by a trolley car on 20th Street near Ritner Avenue and taken to St. Agnes Hospital, where he died at age 57. John had recently been diagnosed as a diabetic. An inquest was held on September 25, 1934 and his death was ruled accidental. John Murphy Daniels was buried on 30 August 1934 at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
