A family tradition shared by compton Crowe of Madisonville, Kentucky in 1962 is that four Crow brothers left Mecklenburg County, Virginia and traveled over the Wilderness Road to the Cumberland Gap. Then two of the brothers turned south to Alabama. John S. and William traveled westward to Kentucky, settling in the Nebo and Corinth neighborhoods of Hopkins County. (The brother William remained in Virginia, but his grandson, William Daniel Crow, came to Nebo from Mecklenburg Co. about 1870. Brother Nathaniel went to Alabama, but brother Thomas Crow remained in Virginia.)
