John Crawford of Botetourt County, Virginia had a son John Crawford, Jr. of Virginia who married his first cousin, Margaret Crawford.

They were parents of at least six children, John III, William, Andrew, James, Samuel and Margaret. The will of John Crawford, Jr. is found in Botetourt County, Virginia dated September 24, 1796, page 438. His wife, Margaret, is named. He names sons, John, William, Andrew, James and Samuel. And he names his daughter Margaret, and his brother, William. His executors were his sons James and John. The will was recorded September 1796. The appraisal of the estate and lands is on page 447, April 1797.

Samuel Crawford married Janet Mason, the daughter of John Mason and their children were: Eleanor, Mary, Janet, Peggy, Mason, Samuel Jr., William, and Sallie.

Records for this family can be confusing because two Samuel Crawford, Srs. lived in Botetourt County, Virginia, an older man and a younger man. The older Samuel was contemporary with the younger Samuel Crawford's parents, John and Margaret Crawford, and he died in Botetourt County, VA. The Circuit Court document in the Botetourt County books (on pages 296 and 297) records that the court settled this older Samuel's estate about the same time as the appraisal of John Crawford's estate. There are no heirs named on the Samuel Crawford, Sr's document, whereas John names his wife and children. One of his children was Samuel Crawford who married Janet Mason, moved to Kentucky and died in Ohio County, Kentucky.... The Kentucky Samuel Crawford who married Janet Mason was also later identified as Sr. p 265 because he had a son, Samuel Crawford, Jr.

The records on pages 296 and 297 for the Botetourt Circuit Court settlement mentioned above, is confusing because there is a note on page 297 which states that in the Order Book Samuel Crawford, Sr. (the older man) is also identified as Andrew? Crawford.....

We learn about the parents of Samuel's wife, Jane (Mason) Crawford (John Mason and Leah McKeachey of Botetourt County, Virginia) from documents regarding Major James Mason, who made several references to his sister Janet who married Samuel Crawford.

Bertha Louise Angle Nicholson Kishi, a Crawford-Mason descendant, researched
Samuel Crawford's estate matters and presented her work for publication in the Kentucky Ancestors Quarterly of the Kentucky Historical Society, Spring 1985, Volume 20, Number 4, pages 202 and 203. This documentation names eight heirs of Samuel and Janet. They were: Eleanor, Mary, Jannet (Janett), Peggy, Mason, Samuel, William, and Sarah.
