    242: Captain John G. W. Cowles was the first Chaplain of the Fifty-Fifth Regiment, having been appointed December 10, 1861. He was born in 1836. He resigned from the army August 7, 1862, and settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where he became one of the most prominent and successful business men in that great and thriving city, and where he still resides. While in the regiment, he was zealous and faithful in the performance of his duties; and although a young man for such a position, he showed the qualities which insured the large measure of success that has marked his subsequent career.
