Most researchers (as of January 2011 give his wife's name as "Leah Lewis", but others give it as "Agnes Martin" and at least one identifies his wife as Margaret Weir?. These variations probably may reflect multiple wives, with John first marrying Agnes Martin in 1788, and then Leah Lewis in 1794. However, Agnes Martin is otherwise believed to be the wife of a different John Cowan, who died in Franklin County, TN some years later. Most of his identified children are attributed to his marriage to Leah Lewis:

Elizabeth Cowan 1800 – 1801

Jonathan J Cowan 1803 – 1871

John Cowan 1804 – 1805

YDNA results indicate that John was a member of the Seven Brother Cowans.
