[edit] SourcesSee Also:Transcript:Will of John Cowan, Abbeville County, SC, 1789 [edit] Related[edit] OverviewJohn is said to have been born in Pennsylvania in 1739, but his father James settled on Beverley's Manor before 1741. He married Margaret about 1760, based on the commonly accepted DOB's of their children. In 1766 he moved with his father and other members of the family to Abbeville Co., SC. There he spent most of the remainder of his life. He served as a Captain during the Revolution in the State Militia. [2]For sometime he operated Cowans Ferry at the Savannah River. It is said that he lived initially on the SC side of the river, but at some point he sold his interest in the ferry and moved to the Georgia side of the River. However, in 1789 he describes himself in his will as "of Abbeville County" SC. His will was probated in in Ninety Six District, SC September 12, 1792.
