John Collins' origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is in 1763 when he was married to Elizabeth Copps, formerly Arnold, a widow whose husband had died earlier that year. She had two surviving sons from her first marriage. They married in the small village of Letchworth, Hertfordshire.

John and Elizabeth were married for just under five years. John was buried on 22nd June 1768 at Letchworth. His burial records that he had worked as a labourer. Elizabeth survived him by thirteen years.

    There was another John Collins buried at Letchworth in 1775, but that burial can be ruled out - whilst the parish register simply calls the 1775 burial John Collins, Bishop's Transcript makes clear that the 1775 burial was son of John and Sarah, who had been baptised in 1761.
