"John Coit, the oldest child of Deacon Joseph and Martha Harris Coit, was born in New London, Dec. 1, 1670, and spent a long life there (as it would appear), in the pursuit of his father's business of shipbuilding. For this purpose, the town granted him, in 1699, a place for a new shipyard near the Point of Rocks, where, in 1729. he built a wharf. … Mr. Coit was received to the church Feb. 28, 1696-7, and his six children baptized, each within a few days of its birth. He died Oct. 22, 1744, aged 74, his will being exhibited Nov. 13,1744."
