Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land in Augusta County:


  • John Clements acquired land in Augusta County prior abt. 1767/68, when his land was "processioned" (as shown below). Although the exact location is not listed in Chalkley's, it appears to be located somewhere just outside the south-eastern section of the Borden Tract, near the "Mary or St. Mary's" River. (see map above). [See listing of Walter Smiley, who was a neighbor listed in the Processioning List of 1767/68, listed below].

  • Page 174.--18th March, 1772. John Clements (Clemens) and Elizabeth ( ) to John Lyle, Sr. Delivered: Jno. Lyle, 4th March, 1774.

Will Excerpt of John Clements

First I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my beloved wife the whole of my goods." "I likewise give my son William Clements my clothes excepting my hat and saddle which I give my son Roger Clements. I give him likewise a suit of white broadcloth and to my son David Clements, one suit of clothes. Filed in the court of Salisbury, N.C. on Feb 5, 1778. [Source: Rowan County, NC Book A page 247]

Born April 1753 Augusta Co, VA d Aug 20, 1834 Jackson Co, TN, entered service 1 Sept 1776 Augusta Co, VA under Capt. Wm. Christy, Lieut. Bohannon; later under Capt. Tate, Capt. Long
Lived Augusta till 1806, moved to Jackson Co, TN, applied for pension there Nov 1832
Those who would testify for him: Jonas Griffith, Wm. Plumley, Capt. Benj. Guess, Alexander Keith, Esq. John Gulley, Daniel Keith
1940 correspondence with Mrs. Laura Thomas Giles, Follis, KY--she say he married Elizabeth Thompson and had a son John, Jr. killed at the Battle of Blue Licks, KY, also a son Gustavus Adolphus b 1769, her g-grandfather.
Letter from Miss Caroline Clements says John Clemons and Clements served under Capt. Wm. Hoffler's co, 1st VA State Reg't commanded by Col George Gibson, came from Rapahannock, Virginia to Clementsville, TN in 1805.
(Note: query letters in Revolutionary War Service Pension files occasionally are for different persons of the same name, which is the case in this instance).
