Facts and Events
Death certificate seems to say that John Brown died of an accident. He fell from the 17th) floor to the cellar (?) of the T. C. Jontein (?) Nut (?) Building on Liberty Ave 11th ward. (original copy easier to read than scan.) JOHN BROWN FOUND IN KIRKMABRECK PARISH IN 1841 CENSUS - March 4, 2007 Possible match from 1841 Scotland Census on Ancestry.com. He listed next to Jess Cochrane who was born about 1826. Name: Jess Cochrane Age: 15 Estimated birth year: abt 1826 Gender: Female Where born: Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Civil parish: Kirkmabreck County: Kirkcudbrightshire Address: Drumore Occupation: F S (female servant) Parish Number: 873 ED: 2 Page: 1 from email message Original Message----- From: Irene Mitchell [1] Sent: Monday, March 05, 2007 11:39 PM To: shaunmartin11@@earthlink.net Subject: John Brown and Janet Cochrane Hi, Shaun: I don't know if the undernoted will be of any help. It seems to me that the marriage Banns were called in Kells and the marriage took place in Kirkmabreck. My reading of this is that John Btrown's residence was Kells, and Jessie Cochrane's family home was in Kirkmabreck. The fact that the first child was christened in Kirkmabreck also points to Jessie being from that place, as women often went home to their mother to have their first child. The Brown's in Kells in 1851 should therefore be of interest. Widowed Gordon Brown is a Toll-keeper -- but if he was John Brown's dad, you would have expected the first male child to be named Gordon, which doesn't appear to be the case. Did the Browns have more family once they reached America? Have you researched back on the Cochrane family in Kirkmabreck? Those that were listed in the 1851 Census, I have included below. People did follow the Scottish naming patterns pretty closely, and if you can work out what names applied to the Cochrane's, then presumably the rest of the forenames came from the Brown side of the family. Sorry I can't think of anything else at the moment. Best wishes, Irene in Canada. In 1851 the same family appears without John Jr. or mother (who apparently had died). John Sr.'s birthplace is given as Falkirk, Stirlingshire. These are the only Browns in Dalry. There are no Browns in Kells in 1841 but 3 in 1851. There is a possibilty that John Brown was a member of the family from Stirling or could have been the son of Gordon Brown from Bennan Toll, Kells in the 1851 census, who was a tollman like John Brown, husband of married Janet Cochrane. There are no John Browns in Dumfrieds, Kirkcudbright, or Wigtown who were born in either Falkirk or Balmaghie. References
