About John Bowman

John Bowman was born [abt.] 1738, possibly in Pennsylvania, the son of Christian Bauman (1699-1764) and Anna Barbara Hite (1705-1750). John's father acquired tracts of land on the North Branch of the Shenandoah River near the border of [then] Frederick and Augusta Counties, Virginia, where John likely grew up. Prior to abt. 1778, John married Barbara [surname unknown] and the had three proven children that reached adulthood:

1. Elizabeth Bowman (abt. 1778-bef. 1806), who married Isaac Ruddell (abt. 1759-1833) on 6 March 1797 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.
2. Margaret "Peggy" Bowman (b. abt. 1779), who married Charles Helvey (1778-1866) on 18 August 1800 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.
3. John Bowman, Jr. (1789-1820), who married Elizabeth Bridges 1793-1862) on 13 February 1812 in Fleming County, Kentucky.

John died sometime between 1816-1819 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, and afterwards his wife Barbara and his heirs were involved in a suit in Shenandoah County, Virginia with the heirs of John's brother Benjamin Bowman, "Bowman vs. Bowman", which documents the children of John and Barbara Bowman listed above, which was a dispute over land in Shenandoah County once owned by their father Christian Bowman. There were apparently no other children then living, as they were not listed in this suit.
