John married his first wife in Missenden, Hertfordshire, and she was buried 10 months later, not long after the baptism of their first child, at Little Hadham, Hertfordshire.

On 3 Apr 1635, "Husbandman Jo: Astwood" enrolled at London on the Hopewell. Enrolled at the same time was Martha Carter, aged 27, probably his second wife.

His will, apparently written in England but calling himself "of Milford," names his wife Sarah, brother William, brother Robert, and son Samuel. It refers to his estates both in Milford, and "here in Abutley."
