Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 448.--24th May, 1763. William Green, &c., to Jacob Rollman, £16, 200 acres on South Fork of Potomac, part of 600 acres patented to Wood, Russell and Green; corner Jacob Rollman and Catherine Zorn's land. Delivered: Henry Stone, March, 1764.
  • Page 477.--18th December, 1769. Michael Proops and Catherine to Henry Stone, Ludwick Wagoner, Mark Swadley and Christian Roleman commissioners for the members of the congregation of the Lutheran Church at the South Fork of Potowmack, 5 shillings, 3-1/2 acres, part of 415 acres whereon Michael now lives for use of the congregation forever.   • Vol. 1 - AUGUST, 1764 (B). Upp vs. Stone.--We, this congregation on the Fork in Augusta County, acknowledge that we have an agreement made with Frederick Upp, schoolmaster, to keep school. We promise to pay him for six months school-keeping for one child twelve shillings and one bushel of wheat, and the above bargain we promise to do and stand to which we have with our hands, or marks, under written as many children as we will send to the school in ye year 1760. April ye 7th. Henry Stone, 3 children. George Bush, 3 children. Henry Pickle, 4 children. Mark Swearly, 3 children. Peter Smith, 3 children. Adam (mark) Strout, 2 children. Michael Rine, 1 child. (Note: Stone promised in the presence of several that in case plaintiff would leave the place he then lived (a plant rented from Jacob Westfall) and come and keep school in the neighborhood, he would warrant 34 children. The settlement of both valleys proceeded at a rapid pace. On August 28, 1750, the following men were added to the list of tithables for the part of Augusta County containing the fledgling settlements: Roger Dyer, William Dyer, John Patton, William Stephenson, Samuel Patton, Matthew Patton, John Smith, Peter Hawse, Henry Hawse, Michael Propst, Mark Swadley, Postley Hoover, George Puffenbarger, John Cunningham, William Cunningham, Henry Lancisco, Jacob Peterson, Jacob Peterson, Jr., Martin Peterson, John Dunkle, George Dunkle, Jacob Seybert and George Mouse (Chalkley, Vol. 1, pg. 41). In the 1753 alone, fifteen newcomers arrived, including: John Davis, Hwney Hawse (deceased 1755), Peter Hawse, Ulrich Conrad, John Dunkle, Jacob Goodman, Michael Mallow, Peter Mozer, Michael Freeze, John Michael Propst, John Michael Simmons, Benjamin Scott, Frederick Sherler and John, James and William Cunningham.
