1686 Jan. 27. Johannes, of Jan Mangels. Wit.: Johannes Lansing. By Geertruy Lansing.

1686
[Johannes' baptismal witnesses] LANSING, Johannes (son of Gerrit), merchant, m. in 1678, Geertie Goosense Van Schaick, widow of Hendrick Coster; naturalized in 1715; d. and was buried in the church, Feb. 26, 1728. Ch: Elizabeth, b. 1679, m. Stephanus Groesbeck, in 1699; Geertruy, bp. Nov. 2, 1684, m. Ryer Gerritse; Johannes, bp. Sept. 4, 1687; Engeltie, bp. Aug. 17, 1690; Gerrit (?); Abraham(?).

Jan Lansing was a younger son of Gerrit Frederickse and Elizabeth Hendrix Lansing who came with his parents to Beverwyck during the 1650s. He was the first of more than fifty early Albany people to be named John Lansing.
|
Jan was a fur trader who was able to amass a considerable fortune while still a young man. By 1679, he had established his own residence within the Albany stockade following his marriage to Geertie Van Schaick, the widow of Hendrick Coster - who brought with her several growing children. Over the next two decades, their household on Pearl Street grew again with the birth of six Lansing children.
|
Jan Lansing was one of Albany's city fathers - being appointed one of the original assistants by the governor in 1686. Two years later he was elected as alderman to represent the Second Ward on the Common Council. Except for the hiatus of 1689-90, he served on the council until 1698. During that time, he sat on a number of committees and courts and regularly performed contract duties. As his children grew into adulthood, the city-based Lansing continued to prosper and invested in real estate. By the early 1700s, Jan Lansing was one of the wealthiest Albany merchants - as his property was among the highest valued on city assessment rolls.
|
A lifelong Reformed church member, Lansing served on the consistory and was actively involved in church business. In 1715, he joined a number of European-born Albany people who became naturalized British subjects. Living on into his eighties, Jan Lansing died in February 1728 and was buried under the Dutch church.

Johannes Roll was baptized as the son of Jan Mangelsen in the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Albany, N.Y. on 1-27-1686, his sponsors being Geertruy Lansing and Johannes Lansing. He was one of the signers of the land petition presented by Mangle Jansen Roll in 1713 in which he is shown as John Johnsen Roll. Various evidence indicates that he left Canostigione, Albany County, N.Y. and settled in the Northern Division (now Port Richmond) Staten Island.

abt 1706
John Roll married Grittie widow of Jan Harmensen Van Barkelo who had four daughters by her first marriage. She had only one child by John Roll, a son, John, who married Fytje Van Buskirk.

1713
He was one of the signers of the land petition presented by Mangle Jansen Roll in 1713 in which he is shown as John Johnsen Roll.

1727
On Feb. 22nd 1727 John Ral of Staten Island, County of Richmond, Planter and his wife Grittue sold to Abraham Sitfon certain track of land and meadow on South Side of Staten Island, consisting of 80 acres salt meadow, bounded on east by land of Samuel Curtis, on west by Coulet Rogerson.

1736
1736. June 27. Douwe Van Wogglum, Jannetje Staats; Catharina; Jan Mangel Rol, Christina Van Wogglum.
|
The fact that his mother's name having been Van Woglum [sic] indicates in the latter record that a relationship existed between Jan Mangel Rol, Christina Van Woglum and Douwe Van Woglum the father of the child baptised, and who in all probability also moved from Albany County to Staten Island during the general exodus following the Indian Massacre.

1739
In the year 1739 John Rall is recorded as serving as Quartermaster in the Richmond County, New York Militia.

1739
On 4/18/1739 Jan Ral witnessed the will of Phillip Merril of Staten Island, which was proved April 18th, 1740.

[Here is the proof that Johannes Roll who married Margrietje, widow of Barkelo, had a son named John Roll, Jr. It is the first time a reference has been cited for this son. What is so interesting is Jannetje was an unwed mother and her stepfather certainly left her well off. I'd like to see the baptism record for Abraham Berkelau to see if the father was named. -Nancy Lohbrunner <lohbrunner@prodigy.net>]

These notes all sent by Clifford Roll to Wilber L. Roll in the last year, 1959-1960...

1745
During Feb. 1745 John Roll of Richmond conveyed to Jannetje Berkelau (Barkalow) and her son Abraham Berkelau, both of Richmond, land on North Side of (Staten) Island. In consideration of his natural love for his daughter-in-law, and on July 3rd. 1749 John Rol conveyed to Jannetje Berkeleau, Spinster, his beloved step-daughter, certain slaves etc. The two forgoing documents are clearly signed "Yon ral", which signatures correspond to John Roll's signature on deed to his nephew for land in Elizabethrown, referred to hereinafter, except on the latter deed, his given name was first written "Yon" and was apparently changed to "John". The writer had been unable to determine the exact family relationship between John Roll and Jannetje Barkeleau, but is inclined to feel that she was probably a step-daughter.

1747
1747. Oct. 13. Abraham Berkelau, Catrina Ellis; Cornelius; Jan Rol, Jannetje Borkelau.

1751
In a list of the members and seat-holders, dated Sept. 30th, 1762 [typo in the manuscript should be 1751 -WHR] of the reformed Dutch Church of Port Richmond, Staten Island, Jan Roll [Sr.] is shown as holding seat 40. This church was built about 1714 and partially destroyed by the British during the Revolutionary War.

1754
A deed dated May 10th. 1754 and acknowledged Oct. 14th. 1757 in which John Rol of Richmond County, Province of New York, transfers a certain piece of land in the western portion of Elizabethtown, Essex County (now Union County), Province of East Jersey (now New Jersey) to John Rol, Jr. of that place, [that] has been in the possession of his descendants since that time to the present day and is given in detail in the Chapter which follows.

1755
In a census of the North Division, Staten Island, taken during the year of 1755, John Roll is recorded as owning three male and one female slaves.
