Martin Schwartz / Swartz was born at Germantown, Pennsylvania, 4 May 1745, son of Martin and Margaretha, and baptized 14 July 1745 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Germantown, sponsored by his maternal grandfather, Peter Lohrmann. [1]. He moved south to Virginia with other members of his family, where he is recorded along with his brother, Gottlieb, as a chain carrier of a survey on the North Fork of the Shenandoah in Frederick County for Peter Weddle in June 1762 (that area is now Shenandoah County). [2] Martin married Maria Eva Sommer about 1770 and in May 1772 purchased 136 acres on Toms Brook from the estate of Peter Mauk. This land was on the west side of the "Great Wagon Road" in the area now known as Harrisville. Frederick Mauck and his wife, Margaret, sold Martin another 100 acres that had been part of the Peter Mauk tract, in May 1779. Martin and Maria Eva had their first two children baptized at the Lutheran Church in Strasburg and appear as communicants there in 1795. Martin wrote his will, in 1811 and named his, wife, Mary Eve, who was appointed executor of the will along with their son, John and named all seven of their children. The will was probated May 9, 1814, and according to the settlement, John Feller was paid for making his coffin the same date.
