Emmigration

  • 27 Aug 1739, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Johan Philip Armentrout arrived in America with his mother on the ship, Samuel, which docked in Philadelphia on August 27, 1739. All immigrant males over age sixteen were required to sign an Oath of Allegiance to the King of England. Among those signing were Johannes, Johan Phillip and Johan Friedrich Ermentraudt.

Early Land Acquisitions in Pennsylvania

  • 1749 - Johan Phillip Armentrout purchased 38 acres in 1749 located in Lower Heidelberg Township near the land owned by George and Veronica Hains. The patentee on Phillip's land was John Leich.

Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 6. - 2nd January, 1755. John Love and Johanna, to Phillip Arrantrout, 18 pounds, 175 acres bought by love from James Downing, who patented it 5th February, 1753, corner said Love's other patent near John Davis's land on the head waters of Smith Creek. Teste: Frederick Arrantrout. John (his mark) Love, Johanna (her mark) Love.
  • Page 250.--18th May, 1773. Charles Rush and Marchius, his wife, to Philip Ermantrout. Patent to Charles, 1st August, 1772. corner John Davis, deceased. Delivered: George Harmon, 5th March, 1776.
  • 1775, Rockingham County, Virginia. Phillip Armentrout purchased this 225 acres located on Cub Run from Christopher Franciscus, which was part of the original Francisus land grant.

  • Vol. 2 - 1779--March 22d, Administration of Daniel Callahan granted son Charles. Administration of Chas. Fred. Sybert granted Nicholas Mildeberger. George Shulenger's will recorded; widow Elizabeth. Chas. Fred. Sybert, a soldier, died in service; widow Mary and one child. George Shulenger was a soldier. Deed by Philip Armentrout to son Philip. Deed by Philip Armentrout to son Henry. Deed by Philip Armentrout to son Peter. George Ruddle qualified Captain. George Baxter qualified Captain. Jno. Herdman qualified First Lieutenant. Thomas Gordon qualified Second Lieutenant. Anne, orphan of Archd. Huston, chose Thomas Hewit guardian. Abigail, ditto, chose James Brewster, ditto. On information against Anto. Cartner and John Snider for swearing to join a company of Black Boys, or Volunteers, discharged. Nicholas Weatherholt bound to Grand Jury for treason.

Rockingham County Court Minute Book, Page 14, Monday, June 27, 1791: The Last Will and Testament of Philip Armantrout Dec'd, was Pro'd by the oaths of Nathaniel Shepherd Armstrong and George Armantrout and 0., to be recorded -- the executor therein named having como'd with the Law. Certificate is granted him to obtain -- probate.

    3. Johan Philip Ermentrout, born 1721 in Germany; died 6-1791 in Rockingham County, Virginia. About 1745 married Elizabeth, born 1725, died 10-7-1795; buried in Cemetery of Peaked Mountain Church, McGaheysville, Rockingham County, Virginia. He is reported to have been a stone mason.

    Philip Ermentrout married about 1745, Elizabeth. On January 2, 1755 he bought 175 acres of land in Augusta County, Virginia from John Love and his wife Johanna, for 18 pounds. Land on headwaters of Smith's Creek, Deed Book 7, Page 6, January 2, 1755, Teste, Frederick Anantrout (Armentrout). In 1758 he bought 225 acres more on Smith's Creek.
    Both Philip and his brother Christopher served in the militia during the French and Indian Wars. Augusta County Records: "Ordered that Philip and Stophel Armentrout be continued in the militia, September 10, 1756." Same record from Augusta County Military Book #1, Page 10.
    After March, 1778 their section of Augusta County became Rockingham County. Rockingham Recorder, Vol. 1, No. 2, Page 146: "At a Court held for Rockingham County, Monday, the 22nd of March, 1779; Deed of L. and Release from Philip Armentrout was acknowledged to his son Philip, Junr, O. to be recorded. The same to his son, Henry, 0. to be recorded.
    The same to his son Peter, 0. to be recorded."

    Rockingham County Court Records, 1786-1791: "At a Court continued and held for the County of Rockingham on Tuesday, April 24, 1787 and in the Eleventh year of the Commonwealth. Present: Messrs. James Dyer, William Herring, Andrew Shanklin, and William Dunlap and Michael Rork, Gent. Justices. Philip Armontrout and Henry Miller are exempt from paying pole tax on account of their age and infirmity of Body.
