He was living with George and Margaret Anderson at 8037 N. Keeler, Skokie, Illinois. Member of Brage Lodge No. 2, I.O.V. and Chicago Flat Janitors Union, Local No. 1.

He arrived in New York City (Ellis Island) on June 9, 1907on the vessel Baltic with Emma. the passenger manifest did not indicate he had been to the U.S. before, unlike Emma. It indicated that he was a laborer and would be staying with a friend, John Carlson , 5789 May St., Chicago. John was probably Emma's half brother. It also indicated he was 5'11.5" tall and had brown hair. Ellis Island records incorrectly show his given name as Jael or Jacl rather than Joel. His surname is shown as Johanson (one s) from Engelholm. The boat. arrival date (one day off), age and home town are the same as his naturalization papers. In addition his name follows Emma Carlsson's name on the list and her naturalization papers indicated she was on the same ship.

He was naturalized on April 11, 1939 at the age of 58. Certificate # 4587362. Certificate indicates he had blue eyes, brown hair, was 5'11" tall and weighed 185 llbs.

Note in Paul's file: 7/97 Per Barbro Gunnerson, they went to Hjarnarp Church to see if Joel and Emma baptized/confirmed there-church indicated all records before 1900 sent to Lund (city?, university?)

The notation on the front of Joel's bible seems to indicate that Joel's surname was actually "Johansson" and that he was confirmed in Rebbelberga on May 5, 1895.

Aunt Marge's birth certificate indicated that Joel and Emma lived at 1050 W. 59th St., Chicago when she was born and that Joel's occupation was a "Stone Derrickman". As I recall, family conversations indicated that he was involved in stone work at Chicago Art Institute and Museum of Science and Industry, the latter located at 55th St And South Shore Drive not too far from 1050 W. 59th St.

Helen's birth certificate indicates that Joel was working as a "molder" in 1911 in Waterloo when she was born.
