Jessie Eliza Ellis was born on 8th July 1862 in Plymouth. By the time of the 1871 census she was living at the Union Workhouse in Okehampton, with two other children called Ellis, suggesting possibly that their parents had died. She later returned to Plymouth, appearing in the 1881 census as a servant.
In 1890, aged 27, she married a postman named John Edwin Harry, who was just over a year younger than her and also from Plymouth. They settled at King Gardens in Plymouth, where they lived in two rooms. They do not appear to have had any children. Jessie was not baptised until just before her fortieth birthday. She then claimed that her parents had been a shoemaker named James John Ellis and his wife Maria Jane.
Jessie died in 1906, aged 43. She and John had been married for just under sixteen years.
