NAME: Adrien Bergeron, LE GRAND ARRANGEMENT DES ACADIENS AU QUEBEC; 1600-1889; vol. 8; p. 43; Gail Burk's copy. Who is Charles THEURIAU who figured among the names on LA COMPAGNIE DE LA NOUVELLE-FRANCE in Acadia (is reference to Coll. de manuscrits: I/83?). [Relationship?]

!MARRIAGE-IMMIGRATION: FRENCH CANADIAN AND ACADIAN GENEALOGICAL REVIEW; 1601-1671; vol. V, nos. 1-2 (1975); p. 111; California State Library Sutro. Reply to a query, "THÉRIAULT (and all the varied spellings: Thériau, Therriot, Thériot, Thériaud, Terrio, Tério, Terriote, Terriot, Terriau, etc.) is an Acadian family name. The first ancestor is Jehan Terriot, b. 1601, the husband of Perrine Rau (or Beau, Bau) and they were married either in France or in Acadia ca. 1636. They lived at Port-Royal, Acadia, In the census of 1671 they had seven children and five [sic, should be six, but one not in Port Royal] of them were already married."

!SISTER: ACADIAN GENEALOGY EXCHANGE, vol. 11, p. 84 (1982) quotes Rieder's ACADIANS IN FRANCE, vol. 2, the Belle-Ile-en-Mer Registers, p. 49. "The descendants of Martin [DUPUIS] declared that he was the son of Martin DUPUIS and of Perinne TERRIOT."

!FAMILY: Genevieve Massignon, LES PARLERS FRANCAIS D'ACADIE; 1575-1675; vol. 1, ; pp. 37 & 49, 58; [get a copy of this]. The TERRIOTs were related to the DUPUIS in France before their emigration to Acadia. The TERRIOT family name was among those of the AULNAY seigniory in Poitou, living in Martaizé, dept. of Vienne, France. She stated that Perrine TERRIOT was probably a sister of Jean TERRIOT and the TERIOTs and DUPUIS were related by marriage before arriving in Acadia." [Where is the documentation for this?]

!NAME: Spelled TERRIAU. The original Acadian immigrant from France, "born in 1601 at Martaize, Aulnay siegnory, Loudun region, Poitou province, France. The town is near La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast of France [sic]." Article from PERSI quoting Father Goulet. It goes on to say "The entire Jean TERRIOT family, including children, arrived in the New World in 1640 [sic]. Later, Jean's sister Perrine sailed to Canada; her husband was Martin Dupuis. . . The original spelling of Theriault was Terriot. This name means 'a man of the land, such as a gardener or farmer, as well as a hamlet." [However, the records show that all the children of this family, beginning in 1637, were born in Acadia.]

CENSUS-DEATH: Neither Jean nor his wife Perrine appear on the 1678 census of Port Royal, Acadia.

!CENSUS: 1686, Port Royal, Acadia, no listing for Jean. A Perrine BOURC, listed as "Mere," is living with this family's granddaughter Marguerite TERIO & her husband Claude LANDRY. [This is the other Perrine BOURG, mother to Claude LANDRY. This is likely where the confusion over surname began. Both Jean TERRIAU and his wife were probably dead.]

[The Philippe TERIO, born around 1654, living in la Baye des Mines at time of 1686 census, age 32, married to Cecile LANDRY age 22, was probably a mistake for Pierre.]

Jehan is listed as "Laboureur" or Plowman. [Another son Jehan is listed, age 32 on the 1671 census. Could he have gone east to Quebec? Whom did he marry?] Karen Theriot Reader

On the first Acadian census of 1671 we find "Jehan TERRIAU" his wife Perrine RUAU, age "soixante-dix" [sic], and their seven children. In an earlier paragraph, he calls him Jean TERRIAU "1er", who settled in Acadia after having married Perrine BOURG [sic]. He cites "(Coll. de manuscrits: I/83)." In the genealogical table beginning on p. 49, he says the couple were born in France of unknown parents, of "Loudunois, province du Poitou." Here we have Jehan [born] 1601, married in France ?-Loudun around 1635 Perrine RUAU, born in 1611.

reference to p. 804; Perrine BOURG should read RUAU, according to handwritten original of 1671 census. [But after careful study this is not convincing, I read it as RAU.]
