    Jay Webber Seaver was born 9 March 1855 in Craftsbury, Orleans county, Vermont. He died 5 May 1915 in Berkeley, CA where he was lecturing. He married Nancy Leona Sheldon Sullivan ("Lona") on 1 July 1886 in New Haven, CT. She was the widow of Leonard N. Sullivan, and was born in 1844. She died in 1928, and both are buried in Chautauqua, NY, where they spent many summers, and which became their permanent residence in 1914.

    Jay Seaver graduated from Yale Medical School in 1885. He instructed in gymnastics and lectured in physical hygiene until 1893 when he became associate director of the gymnasium. In 1889, a lecturer, then for many years the President of the Chautauqua School of Physical Education; in 1895, president, American Association for Advancement of Physical Education; in 1898 he toured Europe studying medical gymnastics, spending most of his time in Sweden; in 1900, president, Society of college Gymnasium Directors. In 1903 he organized the American Institute of Physical Culture, and became president and medical director; also president of the American Association of Physical Educators, the Society of College Gymnasium Directors, and the New Haven Medical Society. One daughter, Ruth Buchanan Seaver, b. 20 October 1888, and one son (adopted), Norman Seaver b. 6 Oct 1895. Ruth m. Nels J. Lennes of Missoula Montana."
