Also in the household was William's aunt, Catherine Chesnut, age 66. Jane and William appeared on the census of 1860 with their children Robert and John in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. William's aunt, Catherine Chesnut, was still living with the family. Jane and William appeared on the census of 1870 with their children Robert and John in the 2nd District, 1st ward, Philadelphia. Jane and William also appeared on the 2nd of enumeration of census of 1870 in the in the 2nd District with their sons Robert and John. Jane Murphy appeared on the census of 1880 with her husband in the household of her son, John R. Murphy, at 932 Tasker Street, Philadelphia. Jane Murphy died on 11 September 1880 in Philadelphia. An obituary for Jane was published on 14 September 1880 in The Philadelphia Inquirer: "MURPHY - On the 11th instant, JANE, wife of William C. Murphy, aged seventy-one years. The relatives and friends of the family, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from her late residence, No. 1206 Moore street, at 2 o'clock this afternoon. To proceed to Evergreen Cemetery." She was buried on 14 September 1880 at Evergreen Cemetery in Camden, New Jersey.
