Jane Lemon Rice was born on 25th January 1884 at Gallons Outon in the parish of Whithorn in Wigtownshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of Margaret (Maggie) Rice, formerly Miller, and her husband Peter Rice, a farm labourer. She was named after her paternal grandmother, Jane Rice formerly Lemon, who was living in Whithorn at the time.

Sadly young Jane died when she was only four months old, having been suffering with bronchitis.
