Jane Patterson was born around 1825 at Morebattle in Roxburghshire, daughter of Hannah Sproat and her husband George Patterson, an agricultural labourer. The family appears to have left Morebattle and moved to the nearby parish of Yetholm when Jane was quite young, with her younger siblings being born there. The 1841 census finds Jane living with her parents and siblings in Town Yetholm, the larger of the two neighbouring villages at the centre of Yetholm parish.

By 1851, Jane had left home and was working as a house servant at a farm called Vencheon in Yetholm.

Sometime around the mid 1850s, Jane married a carter called Walter Robson (or Robertson). He was a widower, with several children from his first marriage. No official record of their marriage has been found, although it may have been an irregular marriage that went unrecorded; Walter’s first marriage had been an irregular one at Coldstream Bridge, in Scotland but immediately beside the border with England. Walter’s first wife died in 1854, and he and Jane were having children together from 1858 onwards.

Jane and Walter appear to have had four children together between 1858 and 1864, although the younger two both died as babies. Jane would also have been stepmother to Walter’s children from his first marriage. Walter and Jane spent all their married life together living at Crookham in the parish of Ford, Northumberland, about ten miles north-east of Yetholm.

Back in Yetholm, Jane’s father died in 1859. He was described as a retail merchant at the time of his death, and it appears that Jane’s mother carried on running a grocery shop in Town Yetholm after his death. Jane’s mother died in 1864.

Jane and Walter appear in each census from 1861 to 1891 living at Crookham. By 1891 all their children had left home, and the census that year also notes that Jane and Walter’s home had just one room.

Walter died in 1892, aged 75. After his death Jane stayed on in Crookham for a few years, being still there in 1901. However, later in 1901 or early in 1902 she moved to live with her daughter Jane and her family, who by this time were living at Morebattle - coincidentally where Jane had been born. Jane died there at Otterburn Lodge on 24th June 1902. She was probably in her late 70s.

This census entry has been linked to the Jane who married Walter Robson on the basis that there was no other Jane Patterson living in Yetholm in the 1841 census, so it seems highly likely that this Jane in Yetholm in 1851 is the same person.

  9. No birth or baptism record has been found for Jane. Her death certificate names her parents as George Patterson and Hannah Sproat. This couple married at Yetholm in 1817, then had three children baptised at Roxburgh between 1818 and 1822. George and Hannah appear in the 1841 and 1851 censuses living back at Yetholm, having younger children living with them, including Jane in 1841. However, no birth or baptism records have been found for any of George and Hannah’s children born after 1822.
