Her father was "an ex-captain of the British navy. ... Capt. Macartney was the youngest brother of Lord George Macartney, a distinguished figure in English diplomacy and statesmanship from 1769 until 1798..." (Centennial Portrait, p. 476-479).
Her mother "was a Murray, of the historical family of that name, and the youngest sister of Lord Dunmore, the last colonial governor of Virginia" (Centennial Portrait, p. 479).
