Jane Lemon was born in about 1826 in County Tyrone in Ireland. However, her first confirmed sighting is not in Ireland but in Scotland, where she was married on 5th December 1850 to a farm labourer named James Rice. He was also from Ireland. They married at Craiglemine, a hamlet in the parish of Glasserton, Wigtownshire. Shortly after their marriage the 1851 census finds them living at Little Craiglemine, with Jane working as an indoor farm labourer.
By the following year the family had left Glasserton and moved to nearby Whithorn, where they lived at Sheddock, a farm to the east of the town close to the coast. James worked as a ploughman. They had six children between 1852 and 1865. Some time between 1871 and 1881 they left Sheddock and moved into the town itself.
Jane died on 15th February 1890 in Whithorn. She was said to be 63. She was buried at St Ninian's New Kirkyard, where her gravestone says:
"Erected by James Rice in memory of his wife Jane Lemon who died 15th Feby 1890 aged 63 years / Also the above James Rice who died at Glasserton 21st April 1907 aged 81 years".
