Woodland Cemetery is located on the northwest corner of the intersection of Washington Street (Route #117) and Knotty Oak Street (Route #116). This cemetery is about 22 acres and contains about 5000 burials with 3771 inscribed burials. This cemetery is commonly known as Knotty Oak Cemetery. The Superintendent is Jerry Carlton. Records at town hall indicate the first lot was sold to Celia and Jane Kilton on November, 19 1874. There are 315 gravestones that predate 1874, indicating that there were many removals to here from small farm cemeteries shortly after it opened. There are 77 Civil War veterans in this cemetery identified on their gravestones and probably more who are not identified.
James Arnold visited this cemetery on November 17-23, 1904 (Vol. 6, Book 15; and September 26-November 29, 1905, and described it as in the "Village of Washington, R.I." (Books D, E, and F). Charles and Martha Benns recorded part of this cemetery in 1937, their #740. Amelia K. Whitford recorded this cemetery in 1986. Unfortunately all three of these recorders mixed the names of Woodlawn, Manchester and Pine Grove, the three cemeteries that make up the Knotty Oak Cemeteries, so that there was no agreement as to which cemetery a person was actually buried. An entire year was spent recording these three cemeteries and reconciling this transcript with the work of previous recorders.
