Jane was born about 1832 in Ireland. Family history reports that her full name was Mary Jane Ironside, but she appears in most records as Jane. She married Samuel Mahorter, son of Samuel Mehorter and Mary Watt about 1856, probably in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jane and Samuel appeared on the census of 1860 in Philadelphia's 1st ward with their daughter Mary.
Jane died on 1 Apr 1866 in Philadelphia of phthisis pulmonalis. An obituary was published on 3 April 1866 in "The Philadelphia Inquirer":
"MEHORTER – On the 1st instant, JANE, wife of Samuel Mehorter, age 38 years.
The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend funeral, from the residence of her uncle, Mr. John Guthrie, No. 1040 Lingo street, above Seventeenth and below Carpenter, this day, the 3d inst., at 3 o’clock. Interment at Mount Moriah Cemetery."4
Jane was buried on 3 April 1866 at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia.
