He joined the Confederate army in 1862 with his brother, Cole, and in 1864 became a guerilla under Quantrill. He was captured in the ambush in which Quantrill was killed and spent the rest of the war in a Union military prison.

In 1873, he joined the James-Younger gang. In 1874, he left the gang after his brother, John, was killed by the Pinkertons. He subsequently worked for two years on a ranch near San Luis Obispo, California -- possibly the ranch run by Drury James, Jesse's uncle -- who is often said (without evidence) to be a cousin, but was at least a family friend. He rejoined the gang at some point and was captured in the Northfield, Minnesota, raid in 1876. Tried and sentenced to life in prison in Minnesota, he was paroled in 1901 with his surviving brother, Cole. Known to be prone to depression, he committed suicide the following year.
