My Dad used to talk about Creed Vanover, who he said was killed in an argument about an election. I have a photocopy of a photo of the Willis boys, including our grandfathers, along with "Poley" (as Dad called him) Vanover. .... I never met Londy or any of his siblings. However I do remember two spouses, my grandmother Calla and your grandmother Effie, who we visited several times a year when we also saw my Uncle Clyde in Raymond, Washington. Now my Dad and all his siblings are gone. Only Mary, Bruce's spouse, is still with us. She is in her 90s, still quite active, and lives in Springfield, Oregon. A really wonderful person and a talented professional level banjo player (she's from West Va.). At her 90th birthday a few years ago she played for us and man, she was smokin'! I have seen only two photos of our great grandfather, Jim Willis. Clyde had a formal portrait and Bruce had a snapshot. From what I can piece together, Jim Willis was not tall, he had a full head of curly red hair, and he had "The Willis Nose," which my brother and I inherited. When we visited Clintwood people knew we were a Willis by our noses! It was weird. Anyway, Jim apparently cut his beard off once a year, at the start of summer, and then let it grow back according to Bruce. Bruce's snapshot portrayed Jim putting on his boots while sitting on the big rock that served as his front step. Jim's beard looked to be about two or three weeks old. And he had a big smile. It's a great shot. I heard a lot of Jim Willis stories while growing up, and they had a common thread of how unflappable he was. Also, a mule was his main transportation. But apparently, according to his statement about his ancestors, he was no genealogist. References
