    "… Captain James Wells, son of Captain James and Elizabeth (Clark) Wells; he was born November 27, 1668. Captain Wells was prominent in town, state and military affairs. Ensign 1701, lieutenant 1705, captain 1714, justice of the peace from 1708 to 1738, deputy to the General Court, 1706-1714,1723-1725. He died December 27, 1744, at Haddam, aged 77 years. His will dated May 22, 1742, and proved February 5, 1744-45, mentions wife, Rebecca; children James, Joseph, Susanna, Martha, Mary and Lydia Wells, and grandson James Merwin. His wife had received a goodly estate from her father."
