Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Image:ThompsonJamesfromThompsonThomasBeverleyNE.JPG

James Thompson's land (Beverley Manor NE, 213 acres (incorrectly listed as 200 acres in some records), acquired from Thomas Thompson (James' brother) in his will written in 1760) as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Hildebrand, cartographer. This map is copyrighted©, used by permission of John Hildebrand, son of J.R. Hildebrand, April, 2009. (Note: this 413-acre tract was previously acquired by John Thompson, father of Robert, from John Seawright, in 1743).

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

James Thompson acquired 200 acres (actually 213 acres according to other Chalkley's records) from his brother, Thomas Thompson, in his will written 25 March 1760, as listed in the Chalkley's records below:

Page 156.--16th March, 1773. Robert Thompson and Agness, James Thompson and Rebecca ( ), to Zachariah Johnston, 400 acres in Beverley Manor, conveyed by Beverley to John Seawright, and by him to John Thompson, 24th November, 1743; John Thompson dying intestate, land descended to his son Thomas, his heir-at-law, who conveyed 200 acres to his brother Robert, and devised 200 acres by his will, 25th March, 1760, to said James Thompson.
Page 352.--18th August, 1784. Isaiah Vansant and Margaret, of Botetourt, to Zechariah Johnston. Thos. Thompson, son and heir of John Thompson, deceased, conveyed 200 acres to his brother, Robert, and 213 (acres) to his brother, James, but not to his heirs, who sold to Z. Johnston, but the title being faulty, title became invested by descent in said Margaret, daughter and only heir of Thomas Thompson. (Note: this records verifies that the land that James received in the will of his brother, Thomas Thompson was actually 213-acres and not 200 acres, as listed in some of the records).

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 156.--16th March, 1773.

Information on James Thompson

Note: the following query states that John Thompson, father of this James Thompson was a son of William Thompson and Jane. This is highly doubtful for the following reason: William Thompson that died in 1781, wrote his will in 1774 and named his son John in the will. John Thompson, this James Thompson's father had died prior to November 1758, which makes it doubtful that he would have been the son of that William Thompson.

Classification: Query Surnames: Thompson Bill, I am researching William Thompson (born abt 1688) and his descendants, William was married to Jane. William is supposed to have died 1781 in Augusta Co, Va, was from Ireland and is mentioned in Tinkling Spring: Headwater of Freedom, 1971, published by the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church. He may have came to America 24 Jul 1740.

The line I am most concerned with is John Thompson (abt 1720) died Nov 1758 in Augusta Co, Va

His son James Thompson (abt 1737) married Rebecca Gay in Rockbridge Co., VA circa 1770. He may be the Captain James Thompson of Lord Dunmore's War. He died 1790 in Lincoln Co, Ky
