James Smith was born in 1853 in Luton, the son of Mary Smith formerly Cain and her husband, William Smith, a labourer. James appears in the 1861 and 1871 censuses with his parents and siblings in Luton. In 1871 the family was living at Tower Hill, next door to James's future wife Sarah Benning.
James's mother died early in 1878.
James married Sarah Benning two months later, on 15th April 1878 at Christ Church in Luton. James worked as a straw plait bleacher and iron foundry labourer. Initially, James and Sarah stayed on Tower Hill, appearing there in the 1881 census.
James and Sarah later moved to the southern part of town, living at Chobham Street in the 1891 census, before settling at 69 Chase Street by the time of the 1901 census. Sarah worked as a straw hat sewer and machinist in Luton's straw hat industry. She apparently had 14 children, but 7 of these had died by the time of the 1911 census.
James's mother-in-law, Elizabeth Durrant (formerly Benning) lived with the family in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses, and died at their home at 69 Chase Street in 1903.
James died on 16th March 1910, aged 56 or 57. Sarah outlived him by about 21 years, and continued to live at 69 Chase Street for the rest of her life.
