From Shirley Maples Killingsworth (e-mail: emerald1@@worldnet.att.net), Seattle, Washington: James Smalley, b. 1830 East Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York, d. 1901 Rockford, Spokane, Washington. He traveled via ship from New York to San Francisco in 1852, settled in Fort Bragg/Mendocino County area of northern California. Co-owned and operated a smithy/livery stable. First marriage to Mary Abrosia Huguerra in that area, she died ca 1875. Second marriage to Annie Elizabeth Rovie; had three sons - Horace Greeley Smalley, Abrahama Lincoln Smalley, Elmore Lawrence "Cobb" Smalley (my grandfather). James was the son of Harrison and Millie (nee Lee) Smalley. Siblings were William L.? Smalley, b. 1830?; Julia Smalley (poss. married a Morris), b. 1832; Harriet Smalley, b. 1837; Janet Smalley, b. 1840; John Jefferson Smalley, b. 1843; Benjamin Hopkins Smalley, b. 1846. All offspring of Harrison and Millie Smalley believed born in East Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York.

Smalley, born 1830 in Dutchess Co. We know there were relatives in Putnam Co but haven't made a solid connection yet. James was the son of Harris and Millie Smalley. He and a brother, John, sailed around the Cape to San Francisco in 1852, settling north of that area along the coast. Might we have a connection?
