James Nicholls was born on 21st July 1899 at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, son of a straw hat machinist named Annie Maria Nicholls, formerly Moles, and her husband George Nicholls, a bricklayer's labourer. He was the couple's eldest child; they had married less than four months before his birth. James appears in the 1901 census living with his parents at Wheathampstead Road (the part later renamed Southdown Road) in Harpenden.

Sadly James died young, aged just four years old.
