Surnames: NEILL, FALLS, CLAYTON, CLINTON

James NEILL who married Hannah CLAYTON was the son of William NEILL and Mary (Polly) CLINTON. William's brother Andrew was the father of Sarah NEILL who married Andrew FALLS. The father of William and Andrew NEILL was also named William NEILL. The mother was named Sarah, but her maiden name is unknown to us at this time. It is possible that she was Sarah FALLS. This speculation is based on the fact that brothers William and Andrew NEILL each named a son Gilbraith/Gilbreath Falls NEILL. Also, William's and Andrew's *brother* James stated in his pension application that he had served under his uncle, Gilbreath FALLS. It also appears that Robert NEILL who married Margaret CLAYTON was the son of John NEILL, another brother of William and Andrew.

With the close association of these families over several generations, it seems likely that the wife of the elder William NEILL could be a FALLS. But "likely" isn't proof! Can someone shed some light on this problem?

Third Generation 9. James3 NEILL (William2, William1) was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania about 1753. James died 12 November 1835 in Marshall County, Tennessee, at age 82.(18)

He married Hannah CLAYTON 1782 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Hannah was born about 1760 in Rowan County, North Carolina.(19) Hannah was the daughter of George CLAYTON and Sarah LAMBERT. Hannah died AFT 1855 in Bedford County, Tennessee, at age unknown.(20) Her body was interred about 1857 in Bedford County, Tennessee.

James NEILL and Hannah CLAYTON had the following children:

34 ii. William NEILL was born in Williamson County, Tennessee 1786. 

+ 35 iii. John Lambert NEILL was born 20 June 1790. 

+ 36 iv. James Clinton NEILL Col was born about 1790. 

+ 37 v. Andrew NEILL was born about 1793. 

38 vi. Samuel NEILL was born 1795. 

39 vii. Mary NEILL was born 2 April 1798. 

40 viii. Alexander D NEILL was born 1800.
