This James Moore has often been confused with other men of the same name who lived in that general area of Virginia, especially with the James Moore who was married to Jane ("Jennet") Walker. But the latter's will was written in 1785, and probated in 1791,

James Moore, Sr. or James (I) as he will be referred to in these and other notes, was in Botetourt Co. Va by 1751 when he purchased 197 acres on the waters of the James River. (DB 4-157 11/28/1751) In 1753 he purchased 350 acres on Looney Creek from John Crockett. (DB 5-132 2/20/1753) On 6 Jun 1780, James and his wife, Jennet, sold the 197 acres on the James River to Ephraim Wilson. (DB 2-564) He wrote his will on 13 Sep 1776 (WB A-120) and when his will was probated in 1780, the upper half of the 350 acres on Looney Creek went to his son John Moore. The lower half of the acreage went to his son James, Jr.

In his will he also mentions his daughter, Martha Ralston. Martha Moore married Matthew Ralston in 1764 in Augusta County, VA. In 1789 Matthew and Martha sold their holdings in Botetourt County and within two or three years moved into what is now Tennessee and settled in Jefferson County. Matthew's 1800 Jefferson County will was witnessed by James and John Moore. This ties James (I) Moore to the James Moore and John Moore in Jefferson County. and serves as evidence that James (I) is related to the Jefferson County Moores.
