His obit was as follows: “James Riley Miller was born in Guthrie County, IA, September 10, 1859, and departed this life October 6, 1925, at the age of 66 years and 26 days. He was the son of Enos and Ruffann Miller, being one of a family of nine children, of which six have preceded him in death. He was married February 11, 1883, to Henrietta Lenhart of Guthrie county. To this union were born seven children; Mrs. Jessie Miller of Menlo, Guy of Panora; C. R., Clyde L., and Mrs. Carrie Morris of Des Moines and Arthur who is at home. One daughter, Mrs. Maud McLuen, preceded him in death nine years ago. His health has been poor for several months, but until a few weeks ago it was not thought to be serious. He was taken to the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, September 18, where he received treatment from a specialist who decided an operation was necessary. This was performed September 24, which revealed the fact that he was suffering from an incurable cancer which caused his death. He was brought home October 2. His parents were pioneers having come to Guthrie county and settled in Jackson township in the early fifties where they lived all their lives. He has lived in the same school district for sixty-five years. He has always been interested in school work having served as director and president of the school board (which capacity he held at the time of his death) for the past twenty-five years. During the world war he was one of the most active workers in the Red Cross and the sale of Liberty bonds. The deceased is survived by his wife, six children, two brothers, J. F. Miller of Glendon, S. P. Miller of Hartley; one sister Mrs. William Messinger of Menlo; fifteen grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral was held at the Dale City church, October 8, with Rev. Robert H. Lewis of Linden officiating.
