    James was the son of Capt. Samuel McCutchan/en and Rebecca Downey.

    He married 3 times. Susannah Bollar, 31 Aug 1803 in Augusta Co. (had a daughter Maria in 1805), Elizabeth Kirkpatrick on 2 Jul 1811 in Augusta Co. by Çhesly Kinney(had sons in Thomas and John in 1819 and 1821) and Margaret McClung on 18 Aug 1825 (no known children). His first wife is buried at the Glebe, his second wife Elizabeth is buried here beside him and his third and last wife is also buried here (with "eon" in her surname).

    In 1885 there are several Augusta Co. Chancery cases involving his families in the Staunton Spectator. Jas Y McCutchan and Peggy McCutchan are involved and possible other children or kin of his.
