1824---James McCowan, Soldier of the Revolutionary War who lived in Cumberland County made the following statements in applying for pension. "James McCowan states he was born in Rockbridge Co VA, and he is 90 years old."

This statement makes his birth year 1734. This family came out of W. VA, reportedly. He had a son named, James, too. His property was closer to Wolf River and the Tennesee border, than my Spring and Smith Creek Cowans. Fide Dot Doll, June 2012, personal communication Q 09:37, 27 June 2012 (EDT)
