Russell &c.;

This day Wm. Robinson came before me, a Justice of the Peace, and made oath that the within enrolled men are Inhabitants of Powell's Valley; the greater part of them have Familys, and when under the command of Lieut. Willoughby were of no service to the frontiers, but rather a prejudice, for their being enlisted prevented the necessary relief coming to us.

Given under my hand this 6th day of Sept'r, 1793.

Washington &c

Lieutenant Willoughby came before a Justice of the Peace of said County, and made oath that the within Pay-abstract contains a Just and true account of a detachment of Militia under his command, ordered into service pursuant to instructions of the Governor of Virginia, dated 15th day of August, '92.

serving with George Rogers Clark

James Mayfield Jr. was serving with George Rogers Clark between Jan. 6,1779 and July 13, 1780, he actually did live in Illinois and was a Virginian which is why he swore his allegiance to Virginia. Illinois as we know it now, became a State in 1818 and Indiana a State in 1816. I suspect that this James Mayfield, Jr. received land in one of these States for his service in the military. Sullivan County, Indiana lies right along the State line between Illinois and Indiana, and if the State lines moved around like they did in some states, then James Mayfield, Jr. could have lived in both Counties at different times.
