About James Marshall

James Marshall likely migrated from Pennsylvania in the early 1760's to an area of Augusta County, Virginia near the North Branch of the Shenandoah River, which later became Rockingham County in 1778. He acquired a tract of 100 acres near the mouth of Beaver run in 1765 from Joseph Dictum, near the family of Rudolph Mauck (Mock), Sr., who had died in 1750. It is thought by researchers that James Marshall's wife Elizabeth was a daughter of Rudolph Mauck, Sr., likely the Elizabeth Maag who was born 1 Nov 1735 and was baptized by Rev. Johann Casper Stoever at Opequon, Orange Co, VA. James Marshall and Elizabeth were married in abt. 1760 either in Pennsylvania or Augusta County. James Marshall's will was proven on 24 August 1778 in Rockingham County, Virginia, as listed in Chalkley's records.

I have just been given this from another Marshall researcher. These Marshalls lived in Brock's Gap in Rockingham County, VA. At the time of James Marshall's death in 1778 this area was a part of Augusta County, VA and became Rockingham County also in 1778. Some of these Marshalls moved on to Nelson County, KY Territory where he was first located in 1791. This area of Nelson County broke off to form Washington County, KY in 1792 when Kentucky gained Statehood.

    Mock Family Historian
Daniel Mauk (Mock) Sr. Family of Rockingham Co, VA, Washington County, KY and Perry Co, IN

Daniel Mauk married Nancy Agness Marshall daughter of James, Sr and Elizabeth Marshall. When James Marshall, Sr. died in 1778 this area of Virginia became Rockingham County, VA. Rudolph Mauk II was appointed guardian of the younger James
Marshall, Jr. 4 May 1784. Rudolph Mauk, Jr. also gave consent for marriage of James Marshall, Jr. when he married Elizabeth Lewis in 1788. Sarah Marshall, sister of James Marshall, Jr and Peter Bloom her husband were witnesses.

It has been suggested that Elizabeth Marshall may have been a sister to Rudolph Mauk Jr. This is based on the fact he did have a known sister by the name of Elizabetha Maag who was born 1 Nov 1735 and was baptized by Rev. Johann Casper Stoever at Opequon, Orange Co, VA. She was listed as a daughter of Rudi Maag who we often refer to as Rudolph Mauck, I. Nothing is know about this Ellzabetha after her birth.
